Sumela Monastery, also called Virgin Mary Monastery, was established on the sharp cliffs of Maçka, near to Trabzon in the 4th century. The structure was further improvement in the 18th century and 19th century and decorated with depictions of many biblical scenes.

The monastery complex is constituted of the rock church, chapels and student rooms as well as a library, sacred spring, kitchen and guest house.  All sections of the monastery complex will be opened to visitation after the ongoing restoration works have concluded.
